My first thumper was a 1939 Ariel Red Hunter - a 500cc single cylinder with dual exhaust.
Of course any engine can be designed in any fashion and Ariel worked out they could increase the breathing on the Red Hunter with a dual exhaust.
The Ariel was a mean thumper - no counter balance to deal with vibration - and while slow to rev- once she got up a head of steam she was not slow about charging forward
